That\u2019s when the networks typically unveil their new fall schedules to advertisers during lavish presentations in New York City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_top\" class=\"tncms-region hidden-print\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>It\u2019s before and during upfront week that many TV fans start to fret that their favorite show might be canceled to make room for new inventory. And so for the last few years I\u2019ve initiated a \u201cTV Death Watch\u201d to explore which series either are in danger of being axed or have been cut down already.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>But again, there is a lot of uncertainty in this area because networks, cable channels and streamers don\u2019t quite know yet when shows will go back into production. Will there be a traditional fall season as we know it? Or will it look drastically different?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>With that in mind, we present a cursory rundown of what we know so far, including what shows are goners already:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong>CBS<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The network didn\u2019t have a typical upfront presentation, but did announce that it had renewed 23 shows for next season, including TV\u2019s No. 1-watched drama (\u201cNCIS\u201d) and top-rated comedy (\u201cYoung Sheldon\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Twenty-three is a lot of shows, but still there were some casualties. CBS handed pink slips to comedies \u201cMan With a Plan,\u201d \u201cBroke\u201d and \u201cCarol\u2019s Second Act,\u201d along with the cop drama \u201cTommy.\u201d Those cuts are proof that past success doesn\u2019t guarantee continued triumphs. All of those shows were headed by stars who once were associated with major hits \u2014 Matt LeBlanc, Pauley Perrette, Patricia Heaton and Edie Falco, respectively.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>CBS previously pulled the plug on \u201cGod Friended Me,\u201d which lasted only two seasons. Also not coming back are two crime dramas that enjoyed long, successful runs before reaching the end this season: \u201cCriminal Minds\u201d and \u201cHawaii Five-0.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong>FOX<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Fox, which doesn\u2019t program nearly as many hours as the other major networks, recently announced a fall schedule that it hopes is coronavirus-proof. It\u2019s a lineup that consists largely of sports franchises (football and WWE wrestling), reality series, animated comedies and shows that were already in the can before the pandemic set in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Of course, Fox is betting (fingers crossed) that the NFL season will happen as planned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>That said, a good chunk of Fox\u2019s established shows \u2014 including the highly popular \u201c9-1-1\u201d and \u201c9-1-1: Lone Star\u201d \u2014 are being held back for midseason and Fox appears to be waiting to see how things shake out before dropping the ax on certain shows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_middle\" class=\"tncms-region hidden-print\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>What we do know is that \u201cEmpire\u201d won\u2019t be back, having completed its run a couple of episodes sooner than planned because of the shutdown. Also Fox earlier pulled the plug on \u201cAlmost Family,\u201d \u201cDeputy\u201d and \u201cFlirty Dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>As for shows on the proverbial bubble? Well, the dramas \u201cProdigal Son\u201d and \u201cThe Resident\u201d have yet to be renewed, but the bet here is that they\u2019ll be back at some point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong>THE CW<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Apparently winter is the new fall for this network. The CW recently announced that it will delay the launch of the bulk of its new shows until 2021, although the final few episodes of \u201cSupernatural\u201d are expect to air in the fall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Previously canceled was \u201cArrow.\u201d Also, \u201cThe 100\u201d will depart after its final season, which begins on May 20.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>That leaves \u201cKaty Keene\u201d as the main CW \u201cbubble\u201d show for now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong>ABC<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>ABC has yet to release any details on how it plans to approach the fall, so it\u2019s difficult to tell which shows are on the chopping block. But, hey, we can always speculate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>\u201cEmergence,\u201d \u201cFor Life,\u201d \u201cThe Rookie,\u201d \u201cSchooled,\u201d \u201cSingle Parents,\u201d \u201cStumptown,\u201d \u201cAmerican Housewife\u201d and \u201cA Million Little Things\u201d were all awaiting word of their fate as of this writing. Of course, some will survive, but none of them should be breathing easy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Already gone are \u201cModern Family,\u201d \u201cHow to Get Away With Murder\u201d and \u201cFresh Off the Boat.\u201d Also, \u201cMarvel\u2019s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.\u201d will bow out after airing one more season this summer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong>NBC<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Uncertainty abounds at NBC which, like ABC, has yet to publicize its fall lineup. We know that \u201cWill &amp; Grace\u201d is done (again) after a second go-around, and \u201cThe Good Place\u201d has gone to the great beyond.
