The Louvre Museum in Paris has recently opened one of the world’s leading art galleries, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death of Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
Preparations for the exhibition took more than a decade and were halted due to a diplomatic and cultural dispute between France and Italy.
The Louvre, which includes the Mona Lisa, opened its doors on Thursday with more than 160 Renaissance paintings and drawings of Da Vinci, some on loan from Queen Elizabeth II, Bill and Melinda Gates.
The exhibition, which is expected to attract more than half a million visitors over the next four months, aims to provide a deeper understanding of the artist’s working methods through the use of his notebooks, infrared imaging technology and virtual reality.
An infrared light on some of his most famous works of art revealed several secrets, with multiple layers of graphics discovered beneath the artist’s final pieces.
