A new toll from the Health Ministry puts the number of dead at 137 and more than 5,000 wounded, while a spokesman from the Health Ministry told AFP that, ‘’the toll is not final and there are dozens still missing.’’

Speaking to Al-Joumhouria newspaper, Health Minister Hamad Hasan said the authorities were working to speedily set up field hospitals in order to rescue those still missing wounded and to effectively distribute resources to the appropriate places as the situation develops. Hasan praised ‘’the continuous contacts with Arab and European states to secure medical aid for Lebanon.’’

Regarding the impact on the COVID-19 crisis, Hasan warned that there would likely be a significant rise in cases due to the heightened shortage in protective equipment, brought about by the catastrophe and its aftermath. He emphasized that parts of the field hospitals would specialize in COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile the government’s Economy Minister Raoul Nehme warned Thursday that the state’s financial capacity was “very limited,” . Speaking to Sky News Arabia, Nehme said Lebanon was not able to face the devastation without foreign aid. ”The capacity of the state is very limited, and so is that of the Central Bank and the banks, we’re not swimming in dollars, ” Reuters reported.
